Happy New Year!
For real, no matter what you do with it. I want for you what you want for yourself…to be happy, to give and receive love and to be free from whatever pain that’s probably driving most of your choices right now.
You know it. I know it. We all know it. We don’t generally do things that are “good for us.”
We do things that help us relieve the pain we are in.
Makes sense, right? The only problem with that is it keeps us in a state of reducing pain…
Which means the background emotion of our lives is pain…and the attempts to deal with it.
Some Facebook love I shared this morning…
What are you willing to make a commitment to? What are you willing to build a plan around that includes emotional growth as well as investing your time, money and attention to? What will feel REALLY good when you’ve accomplished it?
THAT’S your New Year’s COMMITMENT!
I wrote that one because the gym became a place of success for me. I feel confident, competent and challenged in a good way when I go there. Wasn’t always that way, since I was the typical “nerd kid” growing up, with a body that embarrassed me.
(Buy me dinner or be one of my students and I’ll tell you my teenage barbell story.)
I was willing to change my self-image to that of a strong, healthy person, and that’s what allowed me to build a lifestyle around being physically fit.
Then I did the same things around emotional and financial health. And those became reality as well.
And there are always new challenges. Yes, to get new life situations and new “stuff.”
But they always start with taking yourself seriously enough to BE it…before it actually shows up.
And then the plan shows up in the craziest ways!
And the resources do as well.
It’s pretty damn fun, to tell you the truth!
And when your self-image is challenged, you can run back to a place of trying to ease your pain.
That almost always means running away from the problem…with avoidance or “New Years Resolutions” that always fail.
You can also laugh at the pain. And laugh at yourself for having it.
And take its power away.
And open the doors to changing yourself.
So let’s break it down…
95% of the New Years Resolution people will do something-anything to feel better. It will involve spending some money. Or doing something different…for a little while.
It will almost always involve STOPPING doing something they’ve been doing.
Smoking, overeating, overspending, etc.
But there’s nothing to replace the behaviors that are associated with the pain in the first place.
So in a sense they’re naked.
We can only be that way for so long. We gotta run back to that shelter. And that means running back to what gave you comfort in the first place.
The five percent who break through are also in pain. But they can see past it.
They find a way to detach from the self-image that is part of the thing they’re trying to change.
They strip themselves naked. But they replace it with something that feels good, that feels right.
So they do that uncomfortable stuff. They hit the gym. Or they suck on carrot sticks instead of cigarettes. Or they eat protein instead of refined sugar. Or they commit to a business plan that makes sense instead of throwing advertising money into something they can’t handle.
And they embrace the discomfort. They own it, because they see themselves as worthy of going through the steps.
They see themselves as belonging to the results of the plan, not the problem that got them on the plan.
BOOM…there it is.
And the good news…no matter where you are now, you CAN become one of the five percent.
Takes some courage, and a sense of humor.
And being willing to make a commitment.
Yes, I can help you…no matter where you are. I can help you move from the 95% to the Fabulous Five.
