I had an interesting and fun problem this morning. I had a choice to make, and in the process of choosing, I found some great stuff about how to use social media.
This was my Facebook status from earlier today…
Interesting dilemma….I just wrote what I think was a good and emotional post about an experience watching someone almost die on the highway a few years ago. Trying to decide whether or not to immediately publish it to my blog, or submit it to a very popular personal development blog, which accepts only original content…not published anywhere else, including the author’s own blog. What would you do?
The article itself was easy to write. It was just telling a story of something that happened a while back. The rest was just my feelings then, and my feelings now. Really, the process of writing is pretty simple. But that’s a story for another time.
The other part, which I didn’t mention in the post, is that it will probably be at least two weeks until I hear from this blog, and it’s far from a guarantee it will be published.
It’s all set to go in draft form on the dashboard of NO MORE HOLDING BACK.
I asked folks what I should do. The responses were great. Here are a few of them…
“Go with your gut and put yourself in the reader’s shoes and what they would take away from reading it.”
“Trust your gut — get quiet, think about options and go!”
“Post to the personal development blog. And then post a teaser and link to it from everywhere else? Plus youll have plenty more stories for all platforms anyway…”
“I would submit it to the personal development site – you can always post it to your own later (if they DO or if they DON’T accept it). Either way – I look forward to reading it!”
“I would trust my inner guidance – let it go for now and sleep on it, knowing that I would have my answer that’s right for me when I awake the next morning.”
Of all the responses, only one suggested I put it on my blog first.
This was pretty much in line with what I was thinking. What I did was to decide what it was I really wanted. What was most important to me?
* Was it self-expression…the love of writing for its own sake? Got that, no matter where I put it, or even if I don’t put in anywhere.
* Was it to expand my reach and influence? Would that be best served by possibly reaching a blog with a subscriber base of 40,000? Or going for a sure thing of a smaller but reliable group of peeps who dig Larry Hochman…and asking them to spread the word?
* Was it more branding of Larry Hochman and No More Holding Back? Same issues as before. A more organic growth process vs. possibly hooking up with someone who spread my name…but on their site, not mine.
* Was it more customers, more clients, more money? Is that served by keeping it here and marketing to my base? Or by taking the chance that it’ll be picked up by a bigger fish?
Whatever the answer was, it is certainly to get more of the juice of living! The desire to be heard. The desire to make a difference. The desire to be appreciated and rewarded for what I bring to the party.
And yes, wanting money, which at the moment puts one daughter through college and gets another one ready to go next year is a good thing.
(And by the way…you never have to justify your desire for more money. It’s just a convenient way to transfer energy. And keep score, if that’s your thing.)
The I had the brainstorm…
Ask the question publicly.
Here, and on Facebook.
Engage people in the story, and the process.
Be transparent. Let them know I have a story to tell…a good one.
Let them know I have decisions to make, and that I’m listening to their opinions.
Get good answers to my question. The people I’m asking happen to be in my marketplace. So it only makes sense to listen to them.
So…about an hour ago, I submitted “A Life Changing Experience On An Icy Highway” to The Change Blog.
Let’s see what kind of answer I get back from Peter.
Of course the story is staying in my back panel…just in case. 😉
What do you think? Should I have published it here? Did I do the right thing by letting it go?
Have you had to make a choice and asked your social media friends for their opinions?
Please share here, and spread this around by liking it on Facebook, Tweeting and sharing the love all over!
