“Do not mistake being a spiritual warrior with looking for someone or something to fight with. Because your fight is always going to be with the demons within you, not the outside world.”
– Larry Hochman
Sort of has a Zen/Kung Fu thing going for it, doesn’t it?
We’re geared up for a good fight.
It’s our culture.
We’re going to fight cancer.
We’re going to fight unemployment.
We’re going to fight (insert your thing here).
And if by fight, you mean resist it,I can already tell you how that’s going to turn out.
I was all set to write about this topic. But a couple of days ago one of my private clients was talking about how she was fighting the voices in her head.
They were telling her she’s all kinds of bad things…stupid, irresponsible and not worthy of success among them.
She also told me she was “fighting” those voices. Her words.
Now I don’t want to get into too much detail. For one thing, I always protect the privacy of my clients.
For another, this lady pays for my services. I believe in playing fair. She is entitled to a level of service that others haven’t committed to yet.
But here’s the gist of it…
I told her that anything we struggle against gets bigger.
Or as the saying goes, “What we resist, persists.”
Does that mean we should let whatever misery visits us set up shop in our lives?
Of course not.
But to give all our energy to a “fight” is just crazy.
Back to the whole “Spiritual Warrior” thing…
It’s our human nature to think of ourselves as warriors. ..as competing against some force that wants to take what belongs to us.
I’m cool with that. It’s the basis of our sports teams, not to mention our economy and other important stuff.
The cool part is when we learn how to power down – to be spiritual warriors by learning how to let the bad stuff leave our lives without struggle …
…then we have defeated the enemy within us…for real.
I gave my friend one particular technique to help take the power away from that voice. It’s going to work like a charm…always does.
(Sorry…I only give that to students and those who purchase my stuff.)
But start getting used to the idea of being a Spiritual Warrior.
Get a deeper understanding that whatever you want is already within you.
