Not twenty minutes ago I watched my Twitter followers do the equivalent of an odometer rollover.
Yup…I hit 10,000 followers.
I don’t know what happens next. Should someone be sending me a congratulations Tweet? Or an email?
Do I get a gift certificate for a free something or other?
I put some effort into getting 10K. I looked at lots of profiles. I put out a lot of stuff, always trying to be funny, or insightful or compassionate. I try to add value to people’s Twitter experience.
And I suppose I got a reward today. Ten thousand of my closest friends are now hanging on my every Tweet.
Yeah, I know. Maybe five or ten percent are actually noticing what Larry Hochman says.
And of that percentage, some check out my blog or autoresponder…kind of like you are doing here.
And of them, some take the plunge and pick up one of my products or actually get direct support from me through one on one or group coaching.
It’s all good. It’s how we do business here in Cyberland. We create relationships…all different levels of them. From the fleeting to the deep and permanent, and everything in between. But most leaning toward fleeting.
It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers. It’s great marketing for Twitter and Facebook, and all the other places where you can have “friends.”
The numbers give you a sense of achievement. And they give you a reason to stick around. OK, I’ve got ten thousand. Now I’ve got my sites set on fifteen.
It’s good stuff. It’s all good stuff. It’s in how you play it.
So at the end of all the marketing, when your head hits the pillow at night, here’s what I want you to ask yourself…
“How do I feel?”
“How are my relationships with the people I interact with every day?”
“How is the relationship with myself? Am I bringing all kinds of good stuff into my life?”
“Do I have the cash flow? The health? The sense of power and self-control I want?”
“Do I have a sense of partnership with an intelligence (use whatever word you like) that loves, supports and plays with me?”
“Am I substituting my real life for a virtual life? Or is my virtual life adding another layer of blessings to my everyday existence?”
If the numbers are driving you…if you feel like a rat that just got a treat dropped into the maze when you get a *like*…you know the answer.
If you hang out for hours at Farmville…you know.
Did I strike a nerve?
It’s cool. You can try something different. It’s not an either-or thing.
You can cultivate relationships here.
You can also step out into the light.
You’re worth it.
Yeah…you really are.
You’re worth that, too.
