Veterans Day is not as “sexy” as Memorial Day.
We’re not necessarily honoring the people who made the ultimate sacrifice…dying for their country.
It’s not necessarily connected to a war.
And many people don’t like the fact that there’s a large military presence in this country, or that it consumes such a large chunk of our budget.
But whatever country you’re in, especially the USA, when you put your head on the pillow tonight, know there are people who aren’t as evolved as you are.
They would like nothing more than to upend your way of life. To steal your fortune. To destroy what you’ve worked for all these years.
To kill you. And your family.
And one of the main things that is stopping them is a standing professional military.
Not a rag tag militia. Not a few guys with rifles patrolling the neighborhood, (though there are plenty of good people who do just that).
Professionals. All different types.
In the past it was people who were drafted in. Whether they wanted to go or not, they went. And they served.
And they got out. And usually lived honorable, hard working lives.
And today…young men and women who choose to serve.
Maybe for the career advancement. Maybe for the steady paycheck, or sense of adventure.
A few because the idea of combat is something they like.
And many because the idea of being of service to their country feels good to them.
And when their time is up, they’re our veterans.
They move into the civilian world. Sometimes with transferable skills. Sometimes having to start over.
But always part of the fabric of civil society.
War time or peace time…they guaranteed a way of life.
They guaranteed your right to protest against the wars they were sent to fight.
Find a veteran today. And thank them.
And if you are a veteran…thank you for your service.
