If you want to feel more confident to accomplish anything, start by letting go of worrying about what other people think of you.
It happened again.
I went to the gym late Friday afternoon. Packed up all the important stuff. Street clothes, towel, socks, shaving gear and shower stuff stays in the gym bag.
At least I thought so.
Finished the workout – lower body and abdominal muscles. Got a good sweat.
Grabbed a shave – including the head.
Went to get my stuff for the shower.
That’s when I noticed. Dammit, I did it again.
What to do? I didn’t want to go home all smelly. It’s a lot easier to shower at the gym.
(I know this is a male phenomenon. Women never shower at the gym. I don’t even know why they bother installing showers in the women’s locker room.)
As usual, I decided to take the path of least resistance. Shower, dry off, get out, go bareback for the few minutes it takes to get home.
In another time I would have worried whether or not another guy saw me put jeans on without underwear.
Now I have two thoughts about that…
1. Anyone who stares at me while I get my clothes on – well I’m not too worried about social customs. It’s not polite to stare at naked guys getting dressed.
2. (The important one) It’s liberating to be free from worrying about the opinion of others. There are some good reasons for wearing underwear under jeans. It prevents chafing, it keeps things in place (too much information?) and more you don’t really want me to get into.
There are also a lot of reasons we do things that outlived their original purposes a long time ago. Many of the things we do now are there to enforce an existing social custom, one that makes people feel better, but sometimes impedes progress towards what we want.
I don’t intend to make forgetting my underwear a habit. I feel better with them on.
But I feel really good not worrying about what others will think.
What is stopping you from doing the things that will make you successful?
There are a bunch of answers to that. Not knowing what to do or how to do it.
Not enough money.
Not enough time.
Not enough instruction.
Because all of those obstacles are simple to overcome. In fact, I’ll bet just about every successful person got through most of those things, if not all of them.
The Number One Reason We Don’t Succeed Is Because We Worry About What Others Will Think Of Us.
We won’t go to gyms because we don’t want others to look at us.
We don’t talk to potential customers because we’re afraid they’ll talk about us when we’re gone, or worse…while we’re still there.
And the list goes on and on.
So get this…
When you let go of worry, you create a magnificent space for receiving your dreams.
And you start to dream bigger…because you see past worrying about others.
And you get into action…and become a leader.
The right people follow you.
And yes…some people make fun of you.
But you don’t worry. That’s their problem, not yours.
