That is not a pipe.
That’s a drawing of a pipe, right?
It’s an image of a drawing of a pipe, projected onto the screen of whatever device you’re using to read this blog post.
Three degrees of separation from an actual pipe.
It’s just as well. A pipe is something you really don’t need in your life.
I’m not sure what the original intent of that drawing was. It was hanging in the doorway of a high school classroom. Maybe it’s from a novel. Or maybe it’s an art project.
My interpretation of it is someone trying to say the symbols we use for our lives are not the lives themselves.
And the things we do to try to substitute the symbols won’t give us the same satisfaction as the actual things.
That “pipe” will never produce smoke, or the smell of tobacco. It will also never stain anyone’s teeth or contribute to anyone getting cancer. So that’s a good thing.
But if that were a magnificent meal, we wouldn’t eat it. We wouldn’t have the memories of the taste, or the opportunity to tell our friends about the restaurant we got it from.
If it were a beautiful man or woman, we wouldn’t gaze into that person’s eyes and have them gaze back. They wouldn’t hold our hand. We wouldn’t build a life around them.
You see where I’m going with this…
Too many of us live virtual lives. We play with the symbols, the trappings, the trinkets. We experience the adrenaline rush the products of today are marketed to elicit from us. The vibration in our pocket. The “likes” and “follows” that are a poor substitute for connection.
At the moment I’m part of the leadership of two groups: The #GuruCode and The iii Method For Ultimate Health.
Both require you to watch online, as either part of a video hangout or on a phone line or Skype set up.
And both have recorded videos for you to watch.
And both have clear and precise goals…one for you to become a business leader, with the followers and cash flow that go along with it; the other for you to lose weight, get stronger and healthier and function better on every level.
There is no doing those things by just playing with the symbols of our early 21st century existence.
There’s no Wi, or no program that gets you healthier, or gives you more influence.
You have to execute.
You have to do stuff.
You have to reach out across the digital divide.
You have to get up off the couch.
You have to stop reading the self-help book as if it’s a novel, happening to someone else in the third person, and let every piece of it in….starting from the beginning.
You have to stop watching the hangout you paid to be on, or at least invested your time in, as if it’s entertainment. If it’s quality, then it holds the secret to being it, not just watching others be it.
That is not a pipe.
That is someone’s idea of a pipe, transmitted into your senses.
You’re buying it hook, line and sinker…because you don’t have enough curiosity, commitment and sense of self-worth to get your own…
Or you’re an active player in your own life. You’re making your own pipe…or whatever else you’d like to make.
And you’re living in the first person, committed, connected and on purpose.
Touch something or someone today in a way you would normally have technology do for you.
Reach out across the digital divide and do the deal!
See if you don’t feel just a little bigger afterward!
